Clothing Designer Spotlight: Kate Sutton

With summer quickly approaching, many of us will be hitting the golf courses. Golf sportswear is currently dominated by a male style sense: straight, blocky lines, pale colors, and roomy shapes. But many women find this style unflattering. Enter Kate Sutton. Sutton is the clothing designer behind Birdie, a new fashion collection specializing in women's sportswear.

Golf Superstar
Sutton has been a golfer since the age of twelve, but she was never satisfied with the choices she was given for sportswear. As a clothing designer, Sutton wanted to fashion a feminine, fashionable and sexy look that could be worn on and off the driving range. In 2006, Sutton launched Birdie, a golf-inspired clothing line that was inspired by desert landscapes and cool, refreshing tones. Her fashion collection is characterized by:

  • Colorful polos
  • Femme sweaters
  • Short pleated skirts
  • Fitted blazers
  • Bermuda shorts
  • Modern golf caps
  • Cool cotton, silk, and light-weight materials
  • Trendy bags.

We Can Do It!
Golf was traditionally a male sport until recently. With the introduction of women into the professional golf area, many girls and women are now taking interest in the sport. Sutton noticed that women had to adopt the men's style of sportswear just to fit in. Sutton felt that women needed positive encouragement to play with the boys, and this could be done by empowering them with their own fashionable sportswear. Ultimately though, Sutton's fashion line is a great way for women to find comfortable fashion whether they hit the greens or not.
