Seeing Stars: Fashion Design's New Muse
by Sarah Faulkner Fashion School Review Columnist April 06, 2007 In the mid 1990s, supermodels ruled the fashion scene—George Michael's "Freedom" video on VH1 Classics can prove it. Times have changed. Today marks the era of the "It" girl. You can't miss her: she's dominating today's fashion design. The New Bohemian: Stars and Fashion Nicole Ritchie, Mary-Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan—these young celebrities single-handedly created the bohemian chic trend of last Spring. They mark the hottest thing in clothing design since the waifish models of the Sixties and the heroin-chic models of the Nineties. They say that large, oval-shaped sunglasses and black leggings are in and we listen. Fashion design is now cut from the latest edition of Us Weekly: Whatever the stars are wearing ends up in local malls. Pop Princess Glamour Launches Trends The trend doesn't stop with the big screen; America's pop music princesses are also influencing clothing design. Girls became obsessed with their belly buttons when Britney Spears was baring hers, and they wanted Cristina Aguilera's red lipstick when she sported Forties retro on her album cover. New trends in fashion and clothing design are dictated by what these pop princesses are wearing (or not wearing). The Future of Fashion Design The front row of a Zac Posen or Stella McCartney fashion is filled with young Hollywood, just waiting to be photographed in their hip, new clothing designs. And who adorns the covers of most fashion magazines? Today’s magazine racks feature Beyonce, JoJo, and Lindsay Lohan. Fashion design now walks hand in hand with the film and music industries, and the stars are the new faces that partnership. Clothing design is now at the hands of these young fashionistas, not the "supermodels" of the past.
