Fashion Merchandising Professionals Make for Happy Feet
by Joe Cooper Fashion School Review Columnist January 24, 2007 Fashion merchandising is about identifying new designs fulfilling branding requirements and generating success in the marketplace. In the world of footwear, there are many examples of excellent fashion merchandising at work. Want the inside scoop? Step right up (and in) to high foot fashion! The Comfortable, Classy Shoe The trend of notable names in fashion design descending upon budget shopping destinations like Target and H&M has been a few years in the making. A new cousin to this trend is the recent marriage between style and budget in the shoe category, as fashion merchandising professionals strive to make high-end designs affordable - and the other way around. Fashion Merchandising Success The vice president of fashion merchandising at the shoe company Aerosoles, Karen Sadick, told USA Today just how successful footwear can be when it is affordable and fashionable. She described a near 15% increase in sales in years 2005 and 2006. Aerosoles made it one of their fashion merchandising missions to offer shoes with heels as high as 3 inches for under $100. Comfort, not just affordability, is more in fashion these days, and this means big opportunity for fashion merchandising professionals. It produces new designs, a new approach to a large consumer audience, and new marketing opportunities for redesigning brands. Learn Merchandising at Fashion School This is why fashion school is important. What does it mean to redesign a brand? Fashion school can give you the tools to answer these questions and start a fashion merchandising career. And who knows, you might end up with a position like Ms. Sadick's someday. Fashion school will qualify, prepare, and launch you on your career path toward positions like that.
