Are You Fashion Design School Material?
by Kristin Marino Fashion School Review Columnist September 13, 2006 You love clothing and art, you're creative, and you're thinking about attending fashion school. Before you go further in your planning, you need to ask yourself, "Am I fashion school material?" Successful fashion design school students come in all shapes, sizes, and sensibilities. There's room for all passionate fashion people at fashion design school, but the most successful students seem to have a few things in common. An Eye for Beauty Most people can see beauty in things that are traditionally beautiful, but fashion school students can see beauty in the everyday and quirky. It's easy to see the beauty in a brilliant rose, a lovely alpine lake, or Angelina Jolie. A true artist, however, can find the same beauty in a tumbleweed, a puddle, or the face of an octogenarian. You need to be able to see both the mundane and the fabulous through the same lens. An Appreciation of Diversity In fashion design school, you'll be working alongside students from cultures very unlike your own. Students come from all over the world to attend fashion school. You need to be able to appreciate the diversity of your fellow fashion design students and allow yourself to learn from them. An Ability to be Inspired It's important for a fashion school student to be open to inspiration from all avenues. That's where your eye for unique beauty and your appreciation of diversity will come together and inspire your art and designs. That shiny puddle after an afternoon rain can inspire a shape, color, or even texture in your design. A fellow student from a part of the world you have never seen can introduce you to flavors, textures, colors, and shapes that you can incorporate into your fashion designs. When you begin your education at fashion school, keep an open mind and heart, and success will follow you every step of the way. About the Author Kristin Marino is obsessed with haute couture, even though she lives in Reno, Nevada, where you can't even get Gucci or Louis Vuitton, let alone Jimmy Choo. She has a Bachelor of Art in English Composition from the University of Nevada. |
