Are you passionate about film and fashion? If so, consider attending fashion school in Hollywood.

If you want to bring your clothing design skills to the big screen, you've got to move where the opportunities are--in this case, that place is Los Angeles.

In Tinsel Town you'll find opportunities to work as a clothing design assistant on movie sets and television shows, working with wardrobe and costume designers to craft apparel that supports a narrative and adds a layer of visual depth to a production.

Preparing for a Career in Fashion and Film

What kind of training can best prepare you for a career as a wardrobe designer? As with many creative careers, there isn't one path that will guarantee success. It's helpful, however, to have some relevant skills and experience, such as a degree from a fashion school or an art institute. It's even better if the program offers courses in both fashion design and filmmaking.

As you might expect, entry-level jobs working as a clothing design assistant are not terribly easy to come by. In addition to having the right credentials, you'll need persistence and a thick skin to land a wardrobe design job--any aspiring actor, director, or producer can confirm that the entertainment business is highly competitive.

Fast Job Growth Expected in Film Industry

But don't let the competition dampen your enthusiasm for a career in fashion and film. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that jobs in the motion picture and video industry are set to grow at a swift rate in the years ahead. Just look at the number of productions coming out of HBO alone: the Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Lucky Louie, and others. All these productions need clothing designers.

Even if you don't see yourself working in Hollywood, Los Angeles remains a wonderful place to attend fashion school and launch a career in fashion. Like any big city, you'll find many wonderful things to explore and extract inspiration from, including world-class museums, trendy restaurants and cafes, and a vibrant youth culture.

Learn more about fashion schools in Los Angeles and the skills they might be able to equip you with that will serve you throughout your career in fashion.
