Fashion Design Professor Waxes Philosophically On... Barbie?
August 18, 2004 In a recent article it was announced that Mattel's Barbie is going to be getting a new boyfriend named Blaine. This article is hilarious because of how serious collectors are taking this change. They are concerned that the "break-up" of Barbie and Ken will send a bad message for children and are even questioning the sexuality of Ken. "'What if Ken is gay and coming out?' she says, pointing out the 1993 'Earring Magic Ken' doll, which gave him a pierced left ear and had him clad in a lavender mesh vest. That Ken doll became extremely popular in the gay community." I think this is extremely funny that these adults are getting so involved in a child's toy. I grew up playing with Barbie dolls and in my play I would make Ken Barbie's boyfriend, father, neighbor or friend. Little girls change the characters around all of the time. Mattel is probably just looking for a new way to market these dolls. Anyone who has ever played with Barbie dolls should see this article. It is really amusing. |
