Fashion Design Camp for Pre-Teens
August 15, 2004 Toronto's Design Exchange has been running a week-long summer fashion design camp (they also run similar camps focused on architecture and graphic design). Participants are divided into teams and range in age from seven to thirteen. The teams have five days to create the ultimate outfit, with each team designing garments and accessories around their own unique theme. In the end, outfits were modeled as part of a wrap-up fashion show for family and friends. The camp has proved to be wildly popular and the kids themselves already sound like seasoned fashion runway veterans: "'I have been designing since I was 5,' says Andreas Kyriakos, now 8. 'And I really wanted something that would be simple and elegant. This dress is a straight one-shouldered gown that falls about five inches from the ankle, not too long and not too short, in a fabric we really wanted to use. Some people think it's crazy how much I love fashion as a boy, but I know it's my future.'" I just want to remind you that HE'S EIGHT YEARS OLD! Wow. Fashion designers really are getting younger every day... |
