Fashion Design's Rising Stars: Derek Lam and Peter Som

June 14, 2004

Yesterday's San Jose Mercury News had a large feature on two Bay Area-raised designers now living in New York and making their mark on the fashion world. Derek Lam and Peter Som have each been praised in Harper's and Vogue, and have designed clothes for such celebs Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Scarlett Johansson and more.

The profiles include short Q&A's with each designer (favorite fashion era, favorite part of a woman's body to showcase, etc.), but one of the most interesting quotes came from Derek Lam, who makes it clear that despite the fame and praise, fashion is still a business, and a difficult one at that:

"'We had a lot of sell throughs,' he said, referring to the store orders that flooded his company for his spring pieces. While he feels great relief now with the fashion industry's support, Lam said he knows he has a way to go before he can call his business a success. 'The combination of celebrities, retailers and good press is great, but at the end of the day, we're still self-financed and struggling,' he said."
