Ralph Lauren pursued a college degree. He studied business at the Baruch School of Business and Civic Administration of the City College of New York and he dropped out short of receiving his business degree. After serving in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964 he went back to focus on men's fashion.
Working at the time manufacturer A. Rivetz & Co., Lauren ventured into fashion for the first time, creating a tie that was wider that the ones currently on the market. In 1967, Ralph Lauren found a financial backer Norman Hilton and opened his own neckwear boutique.
At those times narrow dark ties were the norm. The inner stylist artist aroused and he successfully shattered that tradition with colorful, opulent trendy ties. He began to sell his own wide tie designs along with other brands. His stylist fashion began to obtain rewards. Ralph and his older brother chose the name "Polo" for his tie collection; they decided this because of the power, style and intrigue that the brand has always been associated with. Later he purchased the name from Hilton.
The harvest began, little by little, with his tie collection Polo; he began the launch of his fashion empire. Next came menswear and, in 1971, Lauren introduced his label for women?s clothing. The preppy and chic look of his collections is now complemented by the whole gamut of sportswear, casual wear and home furnishings. The successful machine was on. From what started as humble beginnings has now become a worldwide phenomenon.
Lauren exemplified the image he projected. He was often featured with his family in magazines chronicling lives of the rich and famous. He was the first ashion designer to market a lifestyle, and also the first to appear in his own advertising.
Today the fashion world admires this legendary American fashion designer, and people love his history of vision and tenacity, it incarnates the American dream of an immigrant son becoming a successful self-made man
Someone said once and I agree: Ralph Lauren is no longer a brand of clothing; it is a way of life.
