For fashion design school students and professionals alike, the holiday fashion excitement has dwindled and the bleak midwinter stretches before us in a sea of drab. During the months of January and February, we could all use a shot of fashion design glitz and glamour.

Hollywood Offers Fashion Design Excitement
Luckily for bored fashion design school students, in a few weeks Hollywood begins rolling out miles of red carpet for another winter award season. With the Golden Globes scheduled for January 15, the Screen Actor's Guild Awards on January 28, the Grammy Awards on Feb 11, and the Academy Awards on February 25, there will be plenty of fashion design hits and misses in the next few months.

Red Carpet Fashion Design Hits
Vintage Hollywood glamour is always in style. Gem tones flatter every complexion and figure. You can expect to see some of your favorite stars in deep sapphire, emerald green, and ruby tones. Black is always good in fashion design, but the shape of the garment must be special and figure flattering. While red carpet mavens of a certain age should consider softer necklines and figure flattering materials, twenty-year old ingénues must stay away from caftans and other matronly choices.

Red Carpet Wrecks: Fashion Design Misses
Most of us have a hideous prom dress or an equally cornea-scorching bridesmaid dress hanging in the back of our closet. We try hard to avoid looking at our own fashion design mistakes, and may have even burned any photos capturing the fearsome frock. When we see a celebrity sporting a dress on the red carpet that gives us flashbacks of the feared prom or bridesmaid garb, our fashion design senses are injured.

Fashion design school students take note. While an event like the Grammy Awards or MTV Awards allow more casual fashion choices, no red carpet diva should be spotted wearing formal shorts, see-through dresses (regardless of underwear choice), gowns with cut-outs (regardless of figure or lack thereof), big bows on the butt (see bridesmaid/prom, above), or boob-smashing bodices.
