For some girls, handbags are a necessary evil. For the other ninety-nine percent of us, handbags are fashion design nirvana. For design school graduate and handbag designer Claire Sanchez, designing these precious packages connects art and the everyday - a connection that Sanchez cherishes.

Driven to Design
Fashion design school students choose to attend fashion design school because they are driven to design beautiful and useful designs. Artist and designer Claire Sanchez, a 2003 art and design school graduate, tells Home Companion magazine that she's compelled to create beautiful and handmade everyday objects that become functional works of art. Sanchez says, "A soap dish is just a soap dish, but if it's beautiful and handmade, you suddenly love washing your hands."

Intuition Leads to Inspiration
The same could be said for Sanchez's handbag design. A purse may just be a vessel for holding keys, a wallet, and some lipstick, but in Sanchez's hands, the purse becomes a joy to carry. The time and effort she dedicates into her special creations is evident. The shapely Jackie bag reflects ladylike glamour while the Nanette clutch with its small cluster of fine feathers is sexy and just a bit dangerous. Sanchez tells Home Companion, "I work intuitively. I begin with the fabric rather than intricate sketches." She prefers to mold and manipulate the purse fabric until she begins to see a bag. She also makes her notes right on the fabric, and shapes the bag 15 to 20 times before she's satisfied with the result.

While Claire Sanchez's approach to fashion design might not work for every fashion design school student, it's worth considering. Fashion design school gives designers the tools they need to make art from the everyday.
