Where do the majority of salaried fashion designers work? In New York and Los Angeles, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here's why the Big Apple and Hollywood draw so many clothing designers.

New York has long been the center of the global fashion industry. Every fall the fashion glitterati descend on the Bryant Park tents for Olympus Fashion Week, which showcases work of the industry's most notable clothing designers.

Besides playing host to fashion's most important shows, New York is also home to many leading American fashion brands, such as Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein. It's also where the ever-important industry association, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, a group that represents the interests of the clothing design business, is based.

New York is also a popular locale for big advertising and movie productions, which often employ fashion designers to create wardrobes for actors. But of course, the center of the film industry is Hollywood, which is also a big magnet for those seeking careers in fashion.

Los Angeles-based Careers in Fashion Fueled by Film Industry
Fashion designers are attracted to Hollywood, or the greater Los Angeles area, for the vast opportunities there, which primarily stem from the film industry. Most careers in fashion are somehow linked to the movie business, either by designing and selling clothing to celebrities or designing wardrobes for film productions.

Some go to Los Angeles to pursue a career in fashion as a clothing designer and boutique owner. As in New York, Los Angeles enjoys a large independent boutique industry. Both cities have high demand for unique, style-setting clothing.

Fashion School in Fashion-forward Cities
As you might expect, there's also a high concentration of fashion schools in New York and Los Angeles. They are host to some of the most prestigious and well-known schools, such as Parsons and FIDM. Because of their high numbers, you're likely to find a fashion school in these areas that fits your needs.

So consider a career-making move to one of these high fashion-minded cities, either to attend fashion school, or pursue your biggest professional dreams.
