What are some of the sexiest, most powerful careers in fashion? Here are the few fashion jobs that draw the envy of every budding fashion designer or aspiring sartorial doyenne.
Fashion House Designers
These are the fashion designers who are heralded for their modern visions of dress. They are the John Gallianos, Nicolas Ghesquieres, and Miuccia Pradas of the fashion industry. They have the greatest influence on fashion, regularly providing inspiration for inexpensive knock-offs found in trendy retail shops. They are living legends, clothing designers to whom novice students of the sartorial arts look to for direction and hints toward the next big clothing design trend.
Fashion Magazine Editors
The success of the book The Devil Wears Prada is all one needs to consider to demonstrate the influence fashion doyennes like Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, have on the fashion industry. Such power-rich careers in fashion are most critical to those in the fashion industry--models, designers, actresses, and labels--who seek their approval and attention. It's widely known that Anna Wintour took a liking to John Galliano early in his career, acting to advance his name and designs among the mainstream fashion press.
Wintour was also influential in changing the face of Vogue, taking it up a notch to the level of absolutely indispensable reading for anyone with an interest in clothing design, regardless of socio-economic status. She's taken models off the cover of the magazine, replacing them with some of the most fashionable and accomplished women in Hollywood, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, and Kiera Knightly.
Fashion Critics
Some may argue that fashion critics, people whose careers in fashion involve writing about the flow of a chiffon dress or the elements of modernity expressed in a line, are not of great influence. Like movie critics, they may often clash with the tastes and sensibilities of the masses. However, they do have a voice in leading magazines and newspapers where their opinions can serve to educate, or merely inspire others to think more critically about clothing design.
Fashion School
What role does fashion school play in all this? Fashion design school can serve as a place to begin a heavy-weight career in fashion, or simply to learn about some of fashion's big players and how to negotiate the landscape in which they operate. Find out for yourself how fashion school can lead to a career with influence.
