In Paris, April 2008, France joined global push against anorexia
The French fashion industry, that is, officials from media outlets, fashion retailers, advertising firms and fashion houses, maintained a meeting with France Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot (Ministere de la Sante et des Sports, France) because of her commitment with people's health.
Under her initiative they signed a voluntary charter, to promote healthy body images among ultra-skinny models in magazine ads and on the catwalks of Paris - the world's fashion capital, joining a worldwide drive to combat anorexia.
There are very important and recognized professionals of different areas referring health. Their opinion is one of the main reasons why they decided to sign this charter: they say that anorexia is the most deadly mental illness.
Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin has proposed the mentioned "charte" to fight against this dangerous enemy.
She affirmed that there is a big difference between feminine magazines giving advises about how to loose some pounds of body weight, when the summer is coming or before Christmas and Happy New Year parties, and some Internet sites where there are explicit expressions promoting anorexia, an illness that is supposed to affect from 30000 to 40000 persons in France.
By this action signatories committed themselves to a series of very positive actions to favour the promotion of healthy body images; with this signature they promised they would refrain from using "images of people that could contribute to the exhibition of a beauty-model of extreme thinness."
The working group that the Health Ministry set up in January 2007 drafted these measures responding to a global outcry, because of the deaths of anorexic models. This important agreement is prone to avoid the vision of bare-bone physiques being held up as the epitome of beauty.
To the World of creation fashion , there will be an informative campaign indicating the risks entailed in the extreme thinness.
Several European countries have launched similar initiatives, while Spain, pioneer in this field, fixed clinical criteria and an index of body mass. Girls who don't respect this index are supposed to be excluded of the Cibeles Catwalk if they are excessively thin.
Similar initiatives have been undertaken by many European countries.
It may be a good idea to continue improving these actions to promote a global consciousness about this illness.
