Are Hats Back in Style?

One of my favorite things about watching the Kentucky Derby is that it's one of the few sporting events where you still see people get dressed up. Where else but Churchill Downs on Derby Day can you see so many women wearing hats?

But that's not the only place you can find them. According to an article in today's Houston Chronicle ("Beauty to the Brim"), hats are back in style. The Headwear Information Bureau in New York claims that hat sales have climbed 15% since the 1980s and they're showing up in more and more places this year:
Vicky Gamez of the Headwear Information Bureau in New York says, "[People] want to be unique. You can try on three different hats with the same suit and have three different looks. A hat can do a lot for your wardrobe." Designers Stephen Burrows and Diane von Furstenberg accented their spring collections with hats. More celebrities are donning them. Even young girls are topping off their look with hats, especially the cowboy variety in any shade of pink.
The article also includes a list of tips for choosing and wearing hats (pick a complementary color to your skin tone and facial shape, wear it proudly, etc.), but buyer beware... not everyone is meant to wear a hat:
"It takes a certain attitude. I don't see a woman who is reserved wearing a hat," says local designer Toni Whitaker, who recently created a line of dress hats. "It really has to be the right occasion," she says. "How frustrating is it to have someone sit in front of you at an event with a big hat?"
