The Golden Globes are always a good primer for the Oscars, but some of us are more interested in the dresses! Always a great opportunity for today's fashion designers to advertise their wares, they're also a great showcase for what works and what doesn't. Those with a career in fashion design in mind should pay attention.

As with every awards ceremony, there were winners and losers in the fashion design game. For me (and I'm sure I'm not alone), Lost star Evangeline Lily's stunning green gown was the hit of the evening. Not everyone could carry off such a bold color, and the jury is still out on the orange gown chosen by Desperate Housewives' star Marcia Cross. However her co-star and winner Felicity Huffman looked stunning in a white Empire Dress by Marchesa, and British star Keira Knightley looked equally gorgeous in a white gown by fashion design house Valentino.

Just as white is a hit for fashion designers this season, black is once again the new black. Charlize Theron, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman and Renee Zellwegger all shone in the color. Sadly, Mariah Carey's black and white number was a turnoff. Who is that lady's fashion advisor?

Do Awards Ceremonies Matter in Today's Fashion World?

Of course! While not everyone watches fashion shows, most people like to watch the awards shows for the red carpet factor. New fashion designers can help their careers if their gown is chosen and is a hit, and budding fashion designers can gain inspiration. It's a joy to see beautiful, often voluptuous women who would not likely appear on the runway. Hopefully next year a fashion designer will clothe voluptuous Mariah Carey in something that does her figure justice.
