TV shows like The O.C., Rich Girls and The Simple Life are being blamed for the expensive habits of today's fashion-loving teens. With money in their pockets and few responsibilities, today's teenagers are spending all of their allowances and wages on fashion.
Last year, teenagers in the US spent $191 billion on designer clothes alone. In addition, we are seeing teenage fashion designers, so don't waste any time in forging your fashion career!
Wood Tobé-Coburn School has a reputation for preparing high school graduates for real jobs, in the real world, in no time flat.
Teenage Fashion: The Lure of the Designer
Today's teenagers are simply spending a fortune (or their parents' fortune) on fashion. Look at the popular teenage shows today, and they're all about luxury. Research by the company NPD Fashionworld suggests that today's teen fashion tastes have become more sophisticated. Fashion designer Donatella Versace has been quoted as saying the girls "go crazy for luxury these days."
The Role of the Teenager in Your Fashion Career
In your fashion career, you will have to look backwards, forwards and at today's fashion trends. You had also better not hang around too long; today's fashion designers are getting younger and younger. Teenager Breegan Heuer, child-actor and clothes store heiress has launched her own fashion design range with her school friend Jessica Jordan.
Of course while not all of today's teenagers have family money to launch their fashion career, or to spend on fashion, as a fashion designer or fashion merchandiser you must be hyper aware of teen target markets. Even college students are averaging $2000 credit card debts in an attempt to keep up with the Paris Hiltons of this world.
As a lover of variety in fashion, I can only hope this designer madness subsides. But what would I know? I'm 33. I suppose I can take comfort now from Britney being married and pregnant, and thank God for Desperate Housewives!
