As a consequence of the economic changes produced by this revolution the generation born in the 1960s wore dresses handmade by their parents. This was the new style fashion generally adopted. To buy shirts it was necessary to obtain coupons for fabric. Good tailors, what is to ironically say "good fashion designers", were recognized by the ability to revamp old clothes, using the less of fabrics. There were no differences between adults and children costumes; the colors to use were primarily four: green, blue, grey and black. The major influence of clothing fashions was due to the films with images of soldiers in uniform, the olive green color was a favorite of young girls.
The Great Cultural Revolution was dedicated to put an end to old ideologies, customs, culture fashions, rejecting at the same time the bourgeois habits. People did not dare to dress traditional Chinese clothing or foreign style nor authentic or false jewels. The patriotic virtue was modesty. They didn't want to expose some sign of aspiring beauty or to highlight their personality. Sometimes agreeing, sometimes under a feeling of profound fear they knew that such attitude would give rise to controversy and problems. The obligatory attitude fashion was to be seen as an equal.
