As a fashion school
Women's Wear Daily Most fashion design industry insiders have a subscription to Women's Wear Daily, which will tell you everything from who's having trouble with child labor in overseas factories to what accessories are selling the fastest. It's the place to go for the latest business news in fashion design, where you get the straight scoop, but not a lot of analysis. The Wall Street Journal If you want to see how fashion stocks are faring on Wall Street, read the Wall Street Journal. In recent years, it has increasingly covered more fashion design industry news, from how Liz Claiborne is selling off pieces of its labels to why Versace is becoming more known for its furnishings and other lifestyle products than its clothing design. The New York Times If you want to learn about the intersection of fashion design, style, culture, and trends, read the New York Times fashion coverage. You'll also find critical reviews of the big shows in New York, Milan, and Paris, as well as some insider news from Cathy Horn's fashion blog on the Times' Web site. Vogue and Other Fashion Magazines This one goes without saying. Just about every fashion school student will subscribe to Vogue as well as several other monthly fashion magazines to gain inspiration from the pictures, and see who's doing what and, in their estimation, how well. The Fashion School Library As a student of clothing design, you might be eligible for discounts on some of these publications. Others you can access for free online, such as the New York Times. The most expensive one will probably be Women's Wear Daily. Check out your fashion design school's library--they will probably have a copy available for students.
