A Prize to Design For In her fashion degree program in Houston, TX, Vi Hua creates classic, simple evening gowns using bold colors and subtle improvisations that make them her own. Everything changed the day she attended "Project Career Day" in Houston. She and about 900 other student attendees participated in the fashion design contest. Hua's designs stole the hearts of the judges, and now she'll be spending the summer studying fashion in Paris, at the Paris American Academy. One judge told the Houston Chronicle that he was "amazed" by the detail shown in her portfolio. What Fashion School Can Bring You With a family sewing background, Hua's enrollment in a fashion degree program developed her design skills and prompted her to participate in Project Career Day. Studying design, improving sewing skills, building a portfolio, and participating in fashion design contests as a fashion student can result in career-building opportunities like Hua's. And location seems to matter less and less. Formerly fashion-neutral cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and now Houston are blossoming into very active centers of fashion design education and industry. After she won the fashion design contest in Houston, Hua stated that she planned to remain there, to take advantage of the city's recent fashion boom.
