Fashion Means Practical Skills and Hard Work Ruben Cruz is a bridal wear designer and a professor at a New York fashion school. For his students, he told Voice of America News, "I want them to develop technical abilities and flair." For Cruz, becoming a successful designer is not all about couture and runway culture. It is about developing real, practical skills that fashion school students can someday use in their fashion design jobs. The VOA writer Adam Phillips says a career in fashion requires "practical skills and hard work." Your talent and passion can be honed in fashion school, through the skills that you learn. But it's not all about talent. Fashion School – Beyond the Passion The $250 billion US fashion industry is heavily affected by advertising, media, and celebrity. These influences create the need for professional networking throughout one's career. Meeting the right people and taking advantage of the right opportunities can help you find success, but you don't have to do it alone. That's what fashion school is for. In fashion school, you develop a network of friends, classmates, future colleagues, and instructors. That way, you don't enter the industry knowing no one. More importantly, getting an internship during fashion school can help you get your first fashion design job. Attend fashion school to learn the practical skills and establish a professional network of associates, then try an internship to show an employer you have the drive to succeed. A well rounded combination of skills, networking, and hard work will open many doors in the fashion industry.
