Get the Most from Fashion School So, what will make or break your fashion school experience? Here are a few tips to put you on the right path, even before you set foot in the classroom. 1. Learn how to operate a sewing machine. Don't waste precious time in fashion school learning how to thread a sewing machine. Pull out your mother's old machine or buy one (as cheap as $50). They aren't that difficult to operate, especially for an aspiring clothing maker such as yourself. While you’re at it, make sure you can stitch a straight seam. 2. Stock up on wardrobe basics. As a fashion school student, you'll want to maintain your appearance, but you won't have much free time to do so. Stock up on white tees, cargo pants, comfortable jeans, knits, and other basics to make sure you don't run out of your own wardrobe essentials while learning to design them for others. 3. Develop a Healthy Lifestyle. Taking care of yourself is essential to your success as a fashion school student. Get plenty of exercise and sleep, and eat lots of wholesome foods like fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. This will also be key during your career in fashion as you jet from one international locale to another. 4. Know your limits and set priorities. Remember that fashion school is an investment in your future career in fashion. So don't spend too much time partying. Leave lots of time for work, learning, and networking. Join professional organizations and show those in the field that you are mature, responsible, and serious about your career in fashion. 5. Attend fashion school at the right time. It's best to attend fashion school when you are feeling healthy, energetic, and excited about what you are doing. Make sure your finances and personal life are settled before you attend school. These simple steps will launch your career in fashion in the right direction. Think about other ways you can enhance your experience, and start school off on a high note!
