year has only just begun, but New York has been thinking ahead for months. This style capital made a set of fresh picks for a year of great fashion.

Since New York Fashion Week in September, design students and fashionistas alike have been eagerly preparing for a new season. Check out New York's predictions for palettes, fashion hits and future flops in 2007.

Color through the Year
Fashion school design students should pay particular attention to the color palettes for 2007. Check out New York's palette picks for the New Year:

  • Opal Gray: This foggy neutral color will see continued success through 2007.
  • Tarragon: Green is back, in a shade reminiscent of fresh herbs.
  • Sky Blue: This traditional Spring color is back, though it will brighten the whole year.
  • Grapemist: Brighter than Sky Blue, but not quite neon, Grapemist could pop for Summer.
  • Golden Apricot: Summer sun-kissed skin will glow wrapped in this muted fruit shade.
  • Hollyhock: A rich purple, this color could warm up Fall 2007.

Hot Trends in 2007
Look for these trends to heat up runways, boutiques, and design school collections throughout the year:

  • Open-sleeve blouses: The "voluminous sleeve" blouse makes arms look more slender while accenting the outfit.
  • Flat boots: Women in New York no longer have to teeter about town, with boot heels lowering to an inch or less. Pair these with pants or mid-length skirts.
  • Textured knit: Fall 2007 will warm up with chunky cardigans and sweater coats in wool and thick cotton.

Accessorizing New York
Hair and accessory design students in New York are already flipping over 2007's fresh new looks. A few promising features of Fashion Week:

  • Coral lips: This warm pink shade is the perfect all-day shade. Pair with dark eyebrows for a striking contrast.
  • Big jewels: The Marc Jacobs show glammed up hair, bags, and bangles with oversized faux jewels in muted colors.
  • Fresh tans: No longer a fake tangerine-orange, 2007's tans will be subtle, light, and perfectly dabbed to accentuate features.

Fashion's Flops
As gauchos, skinny pants, and big sunglasses finally fade into fashion history, design students should be careful not to make 2007's fashion mistakes.

  • Shapeless frocks: From drawstring pants to formless dresses, designers and design students alike should avoid garments that leave everything to the imagination.
  • Horizontal stripes: New York's fashion world has apparently forgotten the eighties and is trying to bring straight across stripes back to the masses. Watch out for this figure-widening look.
  • Fur accents: Some designers are desperately trying to keep leggings on store shelves by pairing them with chunky fur, but even the faux stuff feels antiquated.

  • Trends are hard to predict, but students attending fashion school in New York and around the nation should be wary of clothes that aren't comfortable on real women and outrageous style that doesn't work off the runway.
