Many times celebrities will attain icon status with an empire of movies, albums, accessories and fragrances. The world of hip-hop and rap music is cutting edge in terms of custom clothing design. Missy Elliott has often sported personalized earrings, sweatsuits and baseball caps in her videos. The athletic shoe company Adidas was so taken with Missy's talent (both in fashion design and in music) that she is now designing a line of sneakers in her name. Success in fashion design will come right on the heels of her success in the music industry as a producer and artist.

Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is another hip-hop artist who has conquered the music world and moved into fashion. His custom design clothing company, Sean John, premieres a collection of menswear every year, and a new fragrance has just been launched.

Hip-hop artists have embraced custom design clothing, both as a means of personal expression and profit. As a fashion design school student, what can that combination mean for your career?
