Fashion design houses are inundated at certain times of year with applications from fresh-faced graduates, just like you, looking to start their fashion career. If you haven't had a bite yet, don't be disheartened; the following could make all the difference in getting one of those fashion design jobs.

Dedicated Follower of Fashion

Fashion design jobs are generally concentrated in specific cities and regions, so you could increase your chances of employment just by living in the right area. You may also boost your chances if you have had training or experience in a 'fashion center' such as New York, Paris, London, or Milan.

If you have done your research on what fashion houses are looking for - and tailored your resume and portfolio to suit - then you maybe need to take a critical look at what else you can do to stand out.

Fashion Career Boosters

Attention to detail. As a fashion designer, you should be paying close attention to detail. Check your resume for relevance to each individual fashion career opportunity. Ensure there are no spelling mistakes or other errors.
Networking. Increase your chances of getting fashion design jobs by being in the right place at the right time. Visit fashion shows and get to talk to exhibitors. Get into the fashion scene by going to the same clubs, restaurants and cafes. Most cities usually have a quarter favored by people with fashion careers. You might even take a temporary waiting job here until you get a break.
Free of Charge. Many employers fear recruiting the wrong person. You could offer to work for nothing for your first month so you can show them just how good you are. Alternatively, you could start as a receptionist so they get to know you. Do however let them know that you are interested in a fashion career with the company.

Finally, don't get disheartened if you get a couple of rejections. The successful people with fashion design jobs are only there because they persevered.
